In December of 2013, Egyptian authorities arrested three Al Jazeera English journalists including its Cairo bureau chief the Egyptian Canadian Mohamed Fahmy. All three were charged with supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood. These trumped up charges were part of the ongoing struggle between Egypt and Qatar which owns Al Jazeera. Gary Caroline was hired by Fahmy in December 2014 and worked tirelessly in building broad public support for his release, advocating on his behalf with the Canadian government and developing a strategy for approaches to the Egyptian authorities. Caroline also filed Fahmy’s $100 million claim against Al Jazeera. Fahmy was eventually pardoned by the president of Egypt and returned to Canada after spending over 400 days in an Egyptian prison.
